The removal of a specified proportion of branch growth from throughout the crown to produce an even or reduce density of foliage whilst retaining the trees shape and size.
This procedure reduces the overall ‘sail effect’ of a tree so that it is less likely to be effected by wind damage or blown over in high winds. It also increases the amount of light through the canopy.
